Relatable Characters & Tips For Well Written Historical Fiction

When writing about historical fiction, you have to be passionate about the genre and about getting all of the facts correct. For example, when writing about a particular flower, you want to make sure that said flower, actually grew in that place, during that time. Some people will already have that knowledge and they expect you to have it to, or to have done the research to get the facts. All these details must be fact. Don't forget, it's still fiction, and you get to put your own twist on characters. Send your characters to places they've never been, and put them into relationships they've never had. You can make them experience anything you want; sorrow, jealousy, lust. Pick characters that resonate with you by thinking about all of the things going on in the world around us everyday. Inspiration comes from relatable characters that struggle through a journey. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, are all characters we grew up with. We were exposed to worlds and dimensions, through characters eyes, that we had never seen before. This is how we need to write. We become emotionally connected to these characters, and before we know it; we're rooting for them. At the end of the day, the stories live and die by the characters.
